HVAC Emergency: What to Do When Your System Fails

EmergencyJanuary 4, 20244 min readBy David Martinez

System failure on the hottest or coldest day? Here's what to do while waiting for repair.

Stay Safe First

If you smell gas, leave immediately and call your gas company from outside. Don't flip switches or use phones inside.

If there's a burning smell, turn off the system at the thermostat and breaker. Call for service - don't restart until inspected.

If there's visible smoke, evacuate and call 911.

Staying Cool Without AC

  • Close blinds and curtains, especially on sunny windows
  • Use fans to circulate air
  • Avoid using heat-generating appliances
  • Stay hydrated
  • Spend time in cooler areas like basements
  • Consider going to air-conditioned public spaces if extreme heat
  • Staying Warm Without Heat

  • Use space heaters safely (never leave unattended, keep away from combustibles)
  • Layer clothing and use blankets
  • Close off unused rooms
  • Keep moving to generate body heat
  • Use your oven briefly then leave the door open (only if electric, never gas)
  • Never use outdoor grills or camping stoves indoors
  • While You Wait for Repair

  • Note any sounds, smells, or behaviors before failure
  • Check simple things: thermostat batteries, circuit breakers, filter condition
  • Clear access to the equipment for the technician
  • Gather warranty paperwork if available
  • Preventing Future Emergencies

Regular maintenance catches many problems before they cause failures. Consider our maintenance plan for peace of mind.
