What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one heating and cooling system. Instead of generating heat like a furnace, it moves heat from one place to another - extracting heat from outdoor air in winter (yes, even cold air contains heat) and removing heat from your home in summer.

Why Heat Pumps Excel in the Bay Area

Our mild climate is ideal for heat pumps. They're most efficient when outdoor temperatures are above 30°F, which covers nearly all Bay Area weather. In extreme cold, efficiency drops, but we rarely see those temperatures.

Energy Efficiency Advantages

Heat pumps can be 2-3 times more efficient than gas furnaces for heating. Combined with California's abundant solar power, they're a sustainable choice that can significantly reduce your carbon footprint.

Cost Considerations

Heat pumps typically cost more upfront than traditional systems but offer lower operating costs. California rebates and federal tax credits can offset the initial investment. PG&E offers incentives for heat pump installation.

When Traditional HVAC Makes Sense
