Most Rheem heating and cooling we see in Menlo Park, Atherton and Portola Valley is a ducted split system: a gas furnace or air handler inside, with an air conditioner or heat pump outside. Much of this equipment is built from common, widely stocked parts, so many repairs come down to a correct diagnosis and a standard part. The exceptions sit at the top of the range, where variable-speed parts and the EcoNet control are specific to Rheem.
What Rheem makes
For homes, Rheem sells gas furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps, air handlers, packaged units and ductless systems. Many people know the name from water heaters, and it is common to find a Rheem water heater next to a furnace of another brand, or the other way round. This page is about the heating and cooling side.
Rheem sorts its heating and cooling equipment into series, from the basic to the top: Select, Classic, Classic Plus and Prestige. The lower series are mostly single-stage equipment. The upper ones add two-stage and variable-speed operation, and can be run by Rheem’s EcoNet control.
How the equipment type changes a repair
| Equipment type | Typical parts | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Single-stage furnace or AC | Igniter, flame sensor, pressure switch, capacitor, contactor, standard blower motor | Parts are common; most of the work is diagnosis |
| Two-stage | Two-stage gas valve and pressure switches, two-speed compressor controls | More parts to test, in the right order |
| Variable-speed with EcoNet | Programmed blower motor, inverter drive, communicating boards | Brand-specific parts, and setup after replacement |
A series name on a sales sheet is less useful than the model and serial number on the data plate. Those tell us which parts belong to your unit and roughly when it was built.
What we see fail
- Outdoor units: capacitors weakened by summer heat, contactors pitted from years of cycling, fan motors with worn bearings, and leaks at brazed joints or in the coil.
- Furnaces: cracked igniters, coated flame sensors and pressure switches that do not close.
- High-efficiency furnaces: these drain the water that combustion produces. When the trap or drain line clogs, the pressure switch stops the furnace and the fault looks like an ignition problem. We clear and test the drain before replacing parts.
- Indoor coils: a clogged condensate line in summer trips the float switch and shuts the air conditioner down.
If you smell gas at the furnace or at the water heater, do not test anything: leave the house and call from outside.
Warranty registration and records
Coverage is set by the model and the installation date, not by the brand as a whole, so keep the paperwork that shows exactly what was installed:
- model and serial numbers of the furnace or air handler, the coil and the outdoor unit;
- the installation invoice with its date, and the registration confirmation;
- records of tune-ups and repairs, with the parts replaced.
Register soon after installation; the warranty document states the deadline and what applies if it is missed. A Rheem water heater has its own warranty and registration. Parts coverage pays for the part, and labor is separate. More on our warranty page. We are independent and not affiliated with Rheem.
Repair or replace
Because many Rheem parts are standard, repair stays practical for a long time on a sound system. Replacement becomes the better conversation when the compressor or the outdoor coil fails on an older unit, when a furnace heat exchanger cracks, or when the same system keeps needing repairs. If the house was never comfortable, a replacement is also the moment to move up a step, for example from single-stage to two-stage heat, which runs longer at low fire and evens out room temperatures. Estimates for furnace installation and AC installation are free.
Local notes
Across Menlo Park, from Belle Haven to The Willows, many homes are over 50 years old, with a furnace in the garage or a closet and central air added later on the original ducts. A Rheem system there can work well and still lose the fight against leaky or undersized ducts, so check the ducts before buying a bigger unit. On larger Atherton lots, outdoor units often sit in side yards; keep plants and stored items a couple of feet back so the coil can breathe.
